AI governance · Risk · Policy
I build the systems that hold algorithms accountable to the people they affect.
I'm an AI policy and governance practitioner. I've worked on AI governance in government and in Big Tech, and I've built accountability programs from nothing more than once. Most of my work sits where policy has to become something an organization can actually run: risk assessments, review processes, enforcement workflows, and ways for the public to be heard.
I started in the San Francisco Bay Area, researching early standards for autonomous vehicles, where a bad algorithmic decision happens on a public street. At Meta I helped build governance at scale, including the Oversight Board and the company's first public Community Forum. At TikTok I led a small team building generative AI policy for a new market. Then I moved into public service: as the first AI Trust Officer at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and now as a Technologist-in-Residence at the U.S. Census Bureau.
Available for advisory work, speaking, and select projects. See how I can help or get in touch.
When I'm not working, you'll find me out on a hiking trail or at home teaching my cat new tricks. We're both still learning.
Work with me
I help government agencies, universities, nonprofits, and companies use AI responsibly, especially when they're starting from scratch. Most engagements begin with a short call to understand where you are.
-
Stand up AI governance
For organizations adopting AI with no rules in place yet. I help you set up the structure: a governance committee, clear roles, a review process, and a plan you can actually staff. I've done this from zero at FERC and Census.
-
Assess an AI tool before it launches
For teams about to deploy or buy an AI system that affects people. I review what it does, where it could fail or treat people unfairly, and what safeguards it needs, mapped to the NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, or the EU AI Act.
-
Write or review your AI policy
For organizations that need an AI use policy, a procurement standard, or a list of uses that are off limits. I draft policies that people can follow and that can be enforced, not just signed.
-
Choose enterprise AI tools wisely
For leaders deciding which AI tools to buy on a tight budget. I compare options on cost per task, likely adoption, and risk, and look at what you already own before you sign a new contract.
-
Bring the public into AI decisions
For institutions that want people affected by AI to have a real say. I design public engagement and deliberation, drawing on Meta's Community Forum with Stanford, where more than 5,200 people helped shape policy.
-
Workshops, talks, and moderation
For conferences, faculty, and leadership teams. I teach AI governance in plain language and moderate panels that stay on time and on topic.

2024–now
Enterprise AI and AI policy
U.S. Census Bureau · Technologist-in-ResidenceSupporting the CIO's rollout of enterprise AI. I launched four AI workflow pilots and helped draft the Bureau's AI policy, which covers how AI tools are developed, used, bought, and prohibited. The enterprise solution and policy went live in March 2026. I also advise agencies across government on AI risk and represent Census in interagency AI coordination.

The agency's first AI risk framework
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission · AI Trust OfficerAs FERC's first AI Trust Officer, I led a team of seven to build the agency's AI governance framework, adapting its existing risk management for energy assets. I drafted a three-year AI policy strategy and launched the agency's first AI Governance Committee.

Governance at platform scale
Meta · Governance and Strategic InitiativesHelped design and launch the Oversight Board. Program managed Meta's first public Community Forum with Stanford's Deliberative Democracy Lab, where more than 5,200 people deliberated on bullying and harassment policy in the metaverse. Wrote risk memos and guidance for crisis-level integrity incidents, and worked on transparency reporting and on explaining News Feed to the people who use it.
